See Reference Sheets for best practices in working with individuals with mental health concerns and de-escalation practices.

It is important as organizations serving members of the public to have steps in place to respond to an individual experiencing emotional or behavioral crises. The statistics around mental health in the United States show that around 20% of the population will struggle with mental health concerns this year. Art Pharmacy partners and members recognize that the practice of social prescribing is by definition a community-based, non-clinical intervention. While we do not expect Art Pharmacy members to experience emotional or behavioral crises during their participation in an arts engagement, standard protocols are useful to ensure safety for all involved.

Below are standard steps that can be adapted into a protocol specific for your organization and include local resources.

If you do have a participant in acute crisis, do not call Art Pharmacy. Follow the steps laid out by your organization. If your organization does not have a protocol in place, follow these standard steps:

  1. Give them space and time separate from the group (quiet, or low noise, to reduce stimulation)
  2. Allow them time to call their therapist or another support person

If you are concerned that they may be suicidal, don't be afraid to ask.

  1. Connect with the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline•Can call, chat online, and text

If participant is not able to regulate their emotions or behavior

  1. Call Local Policing Alternatives and Diversion Initiative (if established in your area)
  2. Call 911
